I just don't understand the high reviews, and I have a pretty high tolerance for slow moving books. I had to force myself to get through this book. It is really slow moving and never really gets interesting. It is mostly a lot of talking between characters, way too much horrible description, and not much action. Most writers know that old saying, "show don't tell." There is a reason for that. There are SO many horrible similes and metaphors; nearly every other line you read something like "the moon was like a woman dancing over the ocean." The writing isn't at all refined, and frankly, the story was super boring and flat for me. Much like her breakout masterpiece “The First Time She Drowned”, Kerry Kletter’s beautiful lyrical prose once again shines through in her new novel “East Coast Girls”.From the opening dedication to her hometown friends, I was immediately captivated by Kletter’s illustrative storytelling and gorgeous character development. Anyone who has spent any time on the East End of Long Island will appreciate Kletter’s gifted descriptive imagery and her brilliant use of a multi-narrative construct immediately drew me into the individual struggles of these childhood friends. I found this novel to be simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking, funny and redemptive, all beautifully tied together with Kletter’s uniquely magnificent writing style.I’ve read a few critical reviews with confused curiosity…I do suppose that this book requires some intellect to appreciate. If one gets their news from instagram and prefers to spend the evening settling down with a box of chardonnay and the Kardashians on their TV (no judgement), perhaps this isn’t the novel for you.
